Course Overview

Are you considering a career in a law-related profession but need additional skills support before starting a university law course? Our LLB (Hons) Law with Foundation Year is designed precisely for people like you. In the foundation year, you'll gain essential academic skills and subject knowledge to help you succeed as a university law student. This pathway is perfect if you don't meet our standard entry requirements or if it's been a while since you were in formal education and need to refresh your study skills.

This course is an excellent choice if you aspire to become a solicitor or barrister. It also opens doors to a wide range of career possibilities in the broader legal sector, including journalism, politics, policing, teaching, and more. We understand that students may not have definitive career plans when they first join us, and that's okay. The course is designed to equip you with valuable workplace attributes, ensuring you graduate with a highly regarded qualification that will benefit you throughout your professional life. Our dedicated team of academics, practitioners, and research-active staff will create a supportive learning environment to help you advance in your career.

You can pursue our LLB Foundation Year entry at our UK study centres or as a fully online degree. The course covers foundational legal knowledge and reflects recent changes to professional practice qualifications. You'll have the opportunity to choose from distinct degree pathways to prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE 1) or the Bar, including an International Bar pathway for those interested in more globally focused modules. This flexibility ensures that you receive an education tailored to your career aspirations in the legal field.

Course details and modules

Our foundation year modules are designed to provide the additional support and skills needed to start higher education, ensuring you can complete your full law degree with confidence. After completing the foundation year, you will seamlessly transition to the first level of the full degree course.

At the start of level 6, you will have the opportunity to choose a degree pathway that aligns with your career goals, whether it’s the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), Bar, or International Bar. We offer workshops detailing each pathway, along with comprehensive guidance and support from our team, to help you make the right choice for your future.

SQE pathway

If you aim to qualify as a solicitor in the UK, this pathway provides the essential knowledge and skills required to successfully attempt SQE1. Additionally, you will have the chance to expand your expertise by choosing from a variety of elective modules.

Bar pathway

Designed for students aiming to qualify as a barrister, this pathway includes EU Law, a crucial subject required by the Bar Standards Board as part of the Foundations of Legal Knowledge. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to expand your expertise by selecting from a variety of elective modules.

International Bar pathway

With its internationally focused curriculum, this pathway is ideal for students who wish to practice law outside of the UK. The pathway follows a set syllabus, eliminating the need for additional optional modules, and culminates in the Legal Dissertation module. Law degrees are highly respected across various sectors due to the broader skills they impart, such as critical thinking, effective communication, and presentation abilities.
